While saying that the government has unleashed suppression on people instead of paying heed to the voice and demands of the people and resolve the present crisis peacefully and democratically, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today this situation would push the country into further disaster.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said in a special statement that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Acting President, instead of announcing his resignation and that the Prime Minister was using this power to act in a suppressive manner and against the democratic principles.
"The Prime Minister has ordered to impose curfew in the Western province and has declared emergency regulations island-wide. He is also planning to impose Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). If they are not trying to resolve these issues peacefully and democratically by listening to the people's voice and demands, the country will end up in greater turmoil," he said.
He said the country has plunged into disaster during the last few months and that the people's uprising at this situation is reasonable.
