Parliament, January 23 (Daily Mirror)- The Health Ministry will give utmost priority to developing primary healthcare in the country this year where pilot projects will initiate in two districts in 2025, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

He told Parliament that the government will take steps to expand it to other districts as well.

The Minister said developing primary healthcare is the only way to ease the congestion in Out Patient Departments (OPDs) in government hospitals, adding that 60 million people seek OPD services per year.

He said the only way to ease congestion in OPDs is to develop the primary healthcare in the world by establishing primary healthcare units within some 2.5 kilometre radius for the people to seek health services.

Why not introduce an insurance scheme and include private dispensaries in the system with agreed prices for services. Government can use the National ID as the health card.

Why cant we have electronic health record management system in Sri Lanka. All your medical records lab reports discharge summaries prescriptions send there and available to treating doctor. so patients don't have to run around hospitals with folders full of lab reports like 1940s. Why not Implement Itemised billing for hospitals, pharmacies and doctors. That way healthcare provider can only charge patient using government issued item code with fixed price for each treatment and the price of the item can be reviewed by regulator each year. Also It would be great if theres government funded 24h primary care clinic in each city so hospitals can cut down congestions and waiting times.
