Colombo, March 19 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that no government had taken steps to develop fuel storage capacity to face a global energy crisis, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said today the National People's Power (NPP) government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to construct a multi-product pipeline and to develop the Trincomalee oil tank farm as an energy hub to face a global energy crisis.

He told Parliament that Sri Lanka could have faced the fuel crisis today if previous governments had laid a strong foundation to face a global energy crisis.

"We do not have storage facilities to store sufficient fuel stocks. Trincomalee oil tank farm has not been renovated. Foreseeing a global energy crisis and to prepare for such a situation, we signed an MoU with India and the UAE to construct a multi-product pipeline and to develop the Trincomalee oil tank farm as an energy hub as soon after we came to power," he said.

The Minister said the government has already commenced renovations work of the Trincomalee oil tank farm with Treasury funds as a longstanding solution to a global energy crisis of this nature.
