Government committed to preparing children for technology-driven future: PM

Colombo, July 8 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the Government is committed to equipping Sri Lanka’s children with modern technology, knowledge and skills required to face the challenges of the future.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the ‘Arumasiya’ exhibition and the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new three-storey building at Balangoda Vidyaloka Central College on July 4, the Prime Minister said children in Sri Lanka have the ability to view the world creatively and critically.

She said the Government’s new education reform programme aims to move away from a traditional examination-based system towards a practical and skills-oriented education system.

“The new education reforms scheduled to commence in 2027 are being prepared systematically to ensure that every child leaving school has access to vocational and technical education suited to their talents and the needs of the modern labour market,” she said.

The Prime Minister said vocational education should receive the same dignity and recognition as university education, adding that the reforms would help create a generation equipped with knowledge and practical skills.

During the visit, Dr. Amarasuriya officially opened the ‘Arumasiya’ exhibition, which showcased innovations and creative work by students, and praised their achievements.

She also commended the principal, academic staff, students and parents of Balangoda Vidyaloka Central College for organising the exhibition.

The event was attended by Ratnapura District MPs Wasantha Pushpa Kumara and Sunil Rajapaksha, Balangoda Mayor and Municipal Council members, the Zonal Director of Education, school officials, parents and students.
