Four Lankans killed, three injured in accident in Oman

Four Sri Lankan expatriates were killed while three others injured in a road accident in Jebel Akhdar on Saturday, Muscat Daily reported.

It said the seven Sri Lankans - two adults and five children - were on a weekend trip when the tragic accident happened. The group comprised the father, mother and their three children along with two other children.

Afaaf Ahamed Zakee and Nawal Ahamed Zakee, students of Sri Lankan School Muscat (SLSM) and their mother died in the accident. The father and son are being treated at Nizwa Hospital. Faiq Ahamed Muazaam, another student of SLSM was killed in the accident too.

Another student of SLSM is being treated at Khoula Hospital. Nirmala Liyanage, the principal of the Sri Lankan School in Muscat, said that the school was closed on Sunday to condole the deaths. “A memorial ceremony is planned in the premises at 7.30am on Monday for all students and staff.” Roy Lasantha, General Secretary of the Sri Lankan Social Club said, “The entire Sri Lankan community is in a state of shock.”

He added that though the cause of the accident is being investigated, it is speculated that the father who was driving encountered a brake problem leading to the accident.

I live close to Jebel Akhdar. Accidents happen when driving a 4 wheel drive and coming down the curvy slope using the brakes all the time. People have to come down on Low-range using 4 W and only using 3rd or 4th gear. Not to use brakes all the time. The brakes will fail if someone uses the brakes all the time. Some of the slopes are very steep. Posted by Farook also a Sri Lankan.

It was a great support from Sri Lankans in Oman, including the Sri Lanjan School, School Board, Members, Sri Lankans Social Club and the Sri Lankan Community in Oman, all united Buddhist, Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Omsnis abd people from various countries. I pray this unity should live forever, first time I witnessed this unity in a funeral during my 36 yrs residency in Oman. God Bless All !
