First time in international cricket: Mathews timed out against Bangladesh

DELHI (Daily Mirror) - In what is a first in international cricket, Sri Lanka batsman Angelo Mathews was given timed out during the ICC Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh, after he attempted to replace a broken helmet before he could take strike.

Coming into bat after the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mathews called for a new helmet, but as he had not taken strike within the two minutes stipulated in the laws of the game, he was adjudged timed out following appeals from the Bangladeshis.

While it initally appeared that Mathews had walked onto the field with the wrong helmet, later scrutiny of footage showed him preparing to take strike, before the strap of his helmet broke.

He called for a new helmet, but before he could prepare to take strike once again, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a dismissal.

After a long, animated discussion with the umpires during which he was pointing to the strap of his helmet being seemingly broken, the batsman was asked to leave the field of play.

He was adjudged out according to 40.1.1 of the Laws of Cricket which state: "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out."
