DELHI (Daily Mirror) - In what is a first in international cricket, Sri Lanka batsman Angelo Mathews was given timed out during the ICC Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh, after he attempted to replace a broken helmet before he could take strike.

Coming into bat after the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mathews called for a new helmet, but as he had not taken strike within the two minutes stipulated in the laws of the game, he was adjudged timed out following appeals from the Bangladeshis.

While it initally appeared that Mathews had walked onto the field with the wrong helmet, later scrutiny of footage showed him preparing to take strike, before the strap of his helmet broke.

He called for a new helmet, but before he could prepare to take strike once again, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a dismissal.

After a long, animated discussion with the umpires during which he was pointing to the strap of his helmet being seemingly broken, the batsman was asked to leave the field of play.

He was adjudged out according to 40.1.1 of the Laws of Cricket which state: "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out."

A sequence of events:

Mathews about to take guard and adjusts his helmet

Helmet strap breaks in his hand

Mathews realizes that the helmet strap has broken and goes on to call for a new helmet

Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan notices that Mathews has taken more than two minutes and appeals to the umpire

Mathews is informed that an appeal has been made and that he is out

After an animated discussion with the umpire, Mathews is asked to leave the field of play as he has been adjudged Timed Out.

Unprepared people like this should be dropped.

Keep up the good work Sri Lanka. Disgusting and disgraceful.

    Bandu Monday, 06 November 2023 04:20 PM

So who is responsible for having faulty equipment in an international match. May be they bought second hand helmets - typical Sri Lanka Cricket Board styled corruption. what is the responsibility of the highly paid task Managers.

Like Mankading we will have a new cricket term - Mathewing.

    nogamemaster Monday, 06 November 2023 04:32 PM

Everyone was criticizing Bangladesh captain for this...but well what he can do..they are desperate for a win as well..so all rules apply. When luck runs out .....even helmet can be your villain !!!! There is no good vibe in SL Cricket that's why even such things happen!!!

    Wagner Monday, 06 November 2023 04:32 PM

Players should also know the rules of the game

    Joseph Monday, 06 November 2023 04:38 PM

At least look at the positive side. Wed have set a new world record

HARSHA PERERA Monday, 06 November 2023 04:51 PM

Law 40 of the Laws of Cricket provides that an incoming batsman must be in position to take guard. When he took his guard he saw strapped was broken.

    Palaninaathan Monday, 06 November 2023 04:54 PM

Players should know the rules of the game and should have been prepared with a good helmet

Count down timer Monday, 06 November 2023 04:56 PM

Wondering if a countdown timer similar to that shown for DRS be introduced for incoming batsman too. In Mathews dismisal no one knows how much time lapsed before the APPEAL was made. If the appeal was before 2 minutes the batsman shouldn't be given out.

Communicating with dugout Monday, 06 November 2023 05:07 PM

Finally it all boils down to discipline and intellect; both in scarcity in SL not just in cricket but in every sphere. Players should learn to notify the umpires and opposition captains before communicating with the dugout beyond the playing area especially for similar matters such as what happened today; change of hemet (including requesting for helmet) or glove, a drink or towel etc. Doing so Mathew could have probably avoided all what happened today with his dismissal.

Sri Lanka is breaking so many records in this world cup

cricket fan Monday, 06 November 2023 05:25 PM

Mathews is a very senior cricketer in the Sri Lanka cricket team if not in international cricket and should have been well versed with the laws of the game. He should have discarded his faulty helmet and requested another helmet to be delivered during the break. Instead he was so stupid and continued to waste time more than the specified time permitted to resume his innings as a result the umpire had no hesitation of ruling him out for wasting time in the middle. and holding up the game..This is the first instance in international cricket that a batsman has been dismissed this way.

Is there anything different in your comment than the contents of this news piece?

    Ah Monday, 06 November 2023 05:33 PM

Shakib might be right. But cricket is no more a gentleman’s game after money started playing

Subir Ghosh Monday, 06 November 2023 05:58 PM

So, it's clear that Bangladesh is an unprofessional cricket team under Shakib-ul-Hasan.

    Dharma Monday, 06 November 2023 06:03 PM

Bangladesh cricketers demonstrated their respect to spirit of the game. What would have been the situation if Virat Kohli or Smith or Root ask for replacing a faulty helmet. Angelo, I am really proud of you. ICC has to take action against this elite umpire,

When does the countdown start Monday, 06 November 2023 06:32 PM

At what point does the 2 minutes count down start? From the moment the umpire declares the previous batsman out ??? Or from the time the out batsman crosses the boundry line??

Rohan Abeygunawardena Monday, 06 November 2023 06:33 PM

This is not Gentlemen Cricket. Bangladesh should have requested Mathew to continue.

We need to understand why laws are created Monday, 06 November 2023 06:38 PM

Mathews was timed out BEFORE the helmet issue. Know the laws and abide by the laws. We Sri Lankans are famous for breaking the law. Look at our driving!

    Ravi Monday, 06 November 2023 06:54 PM

Be careful!! Sri Lanka is greatly obliged to B.D!!

    Kumaran Monday, 06 November 2023 07:13 PM

senior player and once captain. How come not aware of the rules?. Simply play the first ball, then get the another helmet. You were just facing spin.

    K. Ranaweera Monday, 06 November 2023 09:01 PM

You can see the difference of Asian players and White players. Such a thing would not have been for the spirit of the game. Bangladesh captain should not have done such a nasty gambling.
