First female conductors assume duties at SLTB

Colombo, Feb. 10 (Daily Mirror) - The first female conductors appointed to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) assumed duties today (February 10).

The women commenced their duties from the Makumbura Multi-Modal Centre (MMC) in Kottawa, officially beginning their roles as conductors on state buses.

A total of 19 women were recently appointed as SLTB conductors, becoming the first female conductors in the history of the state bus service.

In Britain they have done away with conductors years ago and only drivers are employed, where we have both male and female drivers. This latest news from Sri Lanka shows how it is lagging behind other important countries.

This makes women in par with men and recognition of the weaker sex in all fields. Women need separate toilets, rest rooms etc. In the past women only bus service was started, after few months it was withdrawn. Hope the same fate will not fall on this initiative.

A good initiative and it must also be said that the SLTB's male conductors and drivers have generally been well disciplined in comparison to the majority of the private bus conductors and drivers who are a disgraceful lot.
