Colombo, April 29 (Daily Mirror) - Plans to introduce electric train services in parallel with the existing railway system were a key focus at a high-level discussion held this morning (29) at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The meeting, attended by officials from the Transport and Highways Ministry, centred on the modernisation of railway services in the Colombo suburban area under the Colombo Suburban Railway Project.
During the discussions, detailed attention was given to the proposed launch of electric train operations in the first phase along several key routes. These include the Kelani Valley Line from Maradana to Makumbura, the Main Line from Colombo Fort to Ragama, and the Coastal Line from Colombo Fort to Panadura.
Officials also reviewed funding arrangements and potential implementation challenges associated with the project. In addition, plans to upgrade railway infrastructure were considered, including the adoption of standard gauge to replace the existing broad gauge system.
It was decided that the project is expected to commence early next year.
The meeting was attended by Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena, and several senior officials from the Finance Ministry and the Transport and Highways Ministry.
