The Election Commission today announced that April 25 is a suitable date to hold the Local Government election after the polls were postponed from March 9.
Accordingly, the Commission said it had directed the District Returning Officers to make an announcement in this regard.
Earlier, the Commission said that the LG polls which was scheduled to held on March 9 would not be held due to lack of funds.
The Supreme Court earlier issued an interim order preventing the Finance Ministry Secretary and the Attorney General from withholding the funds allocated for election purposes under the 2023 budget. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

If the Local Government election is not held before 19th March 2024, they will be vested under local.government connissioners and the curent ruler will definitely take advantage of this loophole.

This should not be delayed under any circumstances. Election commission should announce the date to hold the election instead of recommending the most suitable date.

EC is only recommending a date for LG Elections as 25th April. Whether this will take place on that day cannot be certain because King Kakkili may put his own plans.

We are in this situation today because of the Rajapakses regime mismanagement of economy and corruption from 2005 to 2015 and again from 2019 to 2022 as a country Srilanka is in disgraceful in front of the world, if Rajapakses not ruined our economy we don't have to go behind IMF. As a nation we are not proud going around the world with the begging bowl.IMF is not the solution, we have to think out of the box and find solutions among our self with determination and courage.

JVPiers have shown again and again that they are good talkers but never capable of get things done. Always trying to take the advantage of others work. Giving absolute power to them is going to be a calculated disaster. Thanks to SJB at-least we have an another date now. But never trust Ranil until he holds the election.

EC Commish can recommend a date for LG elections but RANIL don't want to hold LG or any elections!! What's in favour of RANIL is, that the government don't have any MONEY!! SC or anyone can enforce to hold elections but the fact of the matter is government have no funds to hold elections, period!!

The outcome of LG elections, whoever wins will not solve your hunger or hardship. Anyone who promises prosperity and gets your vote and wins will be putting this country in a deeper mess. Anyway, because of voters like you - we are getting ready to face calamity in the future. Good luck and go ahead and vote in the LG elections so that your hardships will be solved! (We won't join you in another aragaley - because if the subversives come into power - there won't be room for any aragaley or even commenting like this)
