Colombo, Oct. 23 (Daily Mirror) - Commissioner of Prisons and Media Spokesman Jagath Weerasinghe stressed that drug traffickers sentenced to death should be hanged.

During the 435th lecture in a programme implemented by him to create public awareness in Nawalapitiya he said that the prisons in the country have accommodation for only 10500 detainees but the number of detainees already in prisons had increased to more than 36000.

The awareness programme for 500 schoolchildren was organised by the Nawalapitiya police and Kotmale Lions’ Club.

Over 65 % of the detainees are suspects relating to the contraband trade of illegal intoxicants. A majority of drug addicts are Sinhalese-Buddhist children. I decided to implement a public awareness programme in this regard. School children who are the future citizens of the country should be led along the right path or else the country would be ruined.”

“Nowadays, particular attention needs to be given to drug abuse which is spreading at an alarming rate in the country. It is not just one drug but a combination of several toxic chemicals. It destroys the entire system in the body in two years. At the rate of ongoing arrests the number of detainees in prisons would soon increase beyond 40000” He said

The Prison Commissioner requested the political authority to explain President Anura Kumara Dissanayake that it is imperative that those found guilty of drug related offenses are sentenced to death and hanged.

Prof, Priyangani Rajapakse addressed the gathering.
