Colombo,January 22 (Daily Mirror)- A video is going viral on social media showing a female doctor rudely shouting at patients.
Although the location remains unknown, the video depicts the doctor raising her voice at patients as one of them attempted to enter the cubicle where she was stationed.
In the footage, the doctor is heard saying, "Don’t enter until you are called to enter; otherwise, I won’t see any patients," while chasing the patient away.

Don’t blame the doctor. They are overworked and underpaid. Massive crowds and our fellows have no discipline. Most be behaving like cows

under paid??? I beg your pardon, which planet do you live? They have a social responsibility, as their education was funded from tax payers money

think about how people get into a crowded bus. at the end you will find the doctor acting like a private bus conductor. you would have had experiences with private bus journeys. why can't the patients wait till the previous patient finished with the doctor?

Wrong! Whatever circumstances they are working under, being a medical professional comes with ethics and he or she has no right to shout at anyone person while discharging ones duties. They out of all people should know how to behave in any circumstances while at work. Period.

THIS DOCTOR SHOULD BE ISSUED A LETTER INFORMING HER THAT HER BEHAVIOUR IS UNACCEPTABLE AND WARN HER AGAINST A REPETITION. Wednesday, 22 January 2025 02:18 PM
OVERWORKED AND UNDERPAYED IS NO REASON FOR ANY DOCTOR TO BE RUDE TO HER/THEIR PATIENTS. OUR PEOPLE ARE TOO FOND OF USING OVERWORKED AND UNDERPAID FOR THEIR ACTIONS. IF ONE IS DISGRUNTLED AND HAVING ISSUES, THEY NEED TO TAKE IT UP WITH THEIR EMPLOYER, NOT TAKE IT OUT ON PATIENTS, CUSTOMERS ETC. THE DAYS OF LAME EXCUSES ARE NOW GONE.

What do you mean by underpaid!!! You know something they are allowed to open private dispensaries in SL as their main source of income by SL govt. They are working in govt. hospitals as part time employees. Keep in mind!!! Govt spent so called undisciplined public money to bring them to this position to serve for this undisciplined public.

That behavior of the public servant not acceptable and not justified for any reason, there are ways to communicate the other stakeholders the way everyone understands.

@REZZA. Spot On ! One patient enters the room and three others follow. Absolutely no privacy. I commend this doctor for her stance. Well done. Unfortunately, Meeharak will always be Meeharak.

Overworked underpaid! Pardon me. And, free education at tax-payers' expense. Now, these tax-payers are treated like pariahs!

Doctors are also just another set of government workers with all the typical qualities and attitudes of the government service.

That’s no excuse They are very rude (majority of them) they have to realise they have been educated by the people’s money. They have to be taught to behave and be kind to patients. Go to Kalubowila hospital and observe the specially young doctors and nurses conduct. It’s disgusting . .

When anything is given free it is not appreciated and abused. This doctor must be from a govt school and then went to Medical College also fully free of charge. The people who go to govt hospitals also get those services FOC. Some, like three wheel drivers and there families even do not pay taxes. They also consider it bountiful right to be treated like Royals inside a hospital and at times for ailments that they have inflicted on themselves like alcoholism and smoking. This is yskko country.

That is OK because if anybody is injured, that person can be admitted to the wards without delay. If anybody is dead, then the dead person can be admitted to the mortuary without delay.

Generally speaking doctors are good and get on well with all patients but some are rude as well : some doctors think that they are superhuman beings and above the law : but don’t generalise this and every department has got one bad people and if 1 out of 10 is bad it does not mean all are bad : they work hard but not out of love for public but for money and so don’t let them jolly ride us as well : our health sectors need a lot of reforms and update : create a chater for public and healthcare workers relations: let all know their duties and responsibilities: public too must behave well with them if they want to get good treatments out of them :

What's wrong in it? The patients are impatient and doctor must discipline them until she finishes the notes of the last patient she saw. This is not abnormal.

Someone who knows a thing or two about health care of other countries Wednesday, 22 January 2025 02:08 PM
Maintaining privacy of patients is a must. Other patients thinking that queuing up like at a sunday fair is alright, isn't how patient care is offered. Wonder how many times the staff told those patients to wait their turn? SL patients don't know how lucky they are compared to other countries and how well they're looked after. Push these doctors away and make them leave to find jobs abroad, so you can have bigger queues at hospitals.

Priyankara Wednesday, 22 January 2025 02:26 PM
There is a lack of discipline among many Sri Lankans. They often do not know how to wait in queues. She is not blaming anyone, just asking them to wait outside until called. Sri Lankans typically do not knock on doors.

Absolutely true. Happy to see your comment was not sensored (disciplined). Mine almost always does get. Especially if you generalise Sri Lankans.

people Patients in sri lanka have no discipline no manners obviously when so many patients start peep in at the door doctor has the right to discipline them i dont see any wrong in it except rough tone

Missing mechanisms Wednesday, 22 January 2025 04:17 PM
You are correct. I didn't find the tone any harsher than one would admonish their kids. What do people expect; to plead or beg with the patients? Just because a doctor was educated using tax payers money does not mean they have to bow down to every citizen and tolerate such behaviour. Wonder how many of these people who go to government hospitals are tax payers. In the defence of the patients, yes they are/will be anxious and may cross the line in their state of mind. So the hospital management should study such issues and implement measure to avoid such occurrences. It will also help improve/discipline the society as a whole; I hope.

Nothing wrong with this . However much u tell people they will poke their head through the door. Where is the patient privacy? Where are the ethics of the general public? Oh and this person versioning should be arrested. There is a circular stating such.

This is not isolated. Go visit the Apeksha Cancer hospital if you want to sample. Not only the doctors, the nursing and other staff are the same. This is a hospital where most of the patients would not live for too long, who needs to be treated with care and compassion. If the staff does not have the skill, train them....

Read this carefully people. Doctors are not Gods. They are never meant to be gods. They are the talented human beings who were selected to do medicine with highest marks. They have families too. They have feelings. They get angry, why not? They are really fed up doing ten times work than in a developed country for less than one tenth of that salary. Don't expect UK standards from a doctor who is utterly underrated and badly mistreated in here.

Gamini Wednesday, 22 January 2025 04:31 PM
Don't compare doctors in UK with those in SL. Doctors in UK pay for their medical studies and once they start working they also pay taxes

Why on earth do you refer to these people as ‘doctors’ they are not. Just MBBS. I call them by first name. Last time I referred a specialist and the attendant girl (not a nurse )referred to him as ‘sir’ is getting late! I replied saying that I didn’t come to consult my former school teacher, I came to consult ‘Mr. XYZ’ ( no he wasn’t a Professor)

Our patients do not have courtesy or manners. A doctor needs time to update the record between patient visits, but the patients who have no manners try to enter as of they are going to their bedroom.

In the UK the doctor will go out and call each patient inside Then the consultation begins This is why we are still a developing country

The hospital or Clinic admin should have organized an assistant to coordinate the patients to enter in proper turns. Failing such small admin operation are results of such disturbance to the doctor and the patients. Secondly the doctor should refrain from such anger and should contain her patience.

For those who think doctors owe people for the education, when internship is done (1year), that debt is paid in full. Anyone can calculate the amount. In internship, they work for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So, 18 hours of extra duty, done for free to the public. 18 into 365 is 6570 hours. They don't get a single hour paid for extra duty during internship. Apply the rate of extra duty per hour and you'll get a value more than the whole money the government spent for the MBBS course. So, everyone should stop saying that doctors owe the public for paying for the education. THAT DEBT IS PAID during internship.

All the doctors are not same. But recently I have seen a data of Angiogram performed Island wide and Jaffna Hospital leading with 2265 where all other districts below 400. It shows, how the doctors can make the difference and Thanks to Dr.Laxman and Guruparan in Jaffna Cardiology Unit to their selfless service. Patient influx to Jaffna Hospital form other districts too.

Now look at the channelling services at private hospitals the Doctors who are treating will never admonish the patients because there is a system where nurses/attendants will call out the token number and most patients wait for their turn whilst in some cases the doctors who are being channelled give patients who have obtained reports to look into these as a priority. So implement a system and these type of occurrences will be avoided.!!!!!

Whoa, you just cannot barge into anyone room like that - whether dr or otherwise. They are privacy issue of other patients, the dr in particular has to record the previous consultation. The patients needs to be guided by the staff . So access control is necessary. The firmness of the dr cannot be argued.

Who can record a patient examination room without the permission from the hospital director??? Should find out who recorded this and proper action should be taken. GMOA, it's your responsibility.

If the Doctor feels she has the authority to shout and threaten patients, then she should have had the authority to organize a system that she's satisfied with. She's appointed and given a salary to do a job, if the salary is insufficient or the workload is too much she can resign but cannot behave as a street thug.
