Colombo, May 25 (Daily Mirror) - Police denied reports that a new law has been introduced in Arugam Bay banning locals and foreigners from wearing bikinis in public places.
The matter sparked controversy after a post claiming to be from the 'People of the Local Community in Arugam Bay' which stated that there was a ban on wearing bikinis in the area.
"Welcome to Arugam Bay! We are delighted to have you here and truly value your visit. To honour our local culture, we kindly request that you avoid wearing bikinis in public spaces. Your respect for our traditions means a lot to our community. Thank you for your understanding, and we hope you enjoy your time in beautiful Arugam Bay!" the post stated.
However, when the Daily Mirror contacted the OIC of the Pottuvil Police, he denied the claim and said there is no such ban in place.
He said the post was shared by an individual and that an investigation had been launched.
Arugam Bay is a very popular tourist destination, especially for surfers. It is known for its beautiful beaches and strong waves. Arugam Bay is a unique and attractive spot for both local and international visitors.

The point is this , in Western countries bikinis is the standard dress for women in the beaches so it is not a big deal in the West. But here most of our women don't wear bikinis in the beaches and only the Western women do. So naturally it is bound to make our men folk sexually frustrating watching these white women showing off their curves and cracks very clearly. On this ground bikinis should be banned in all Sri Lankan public places .

It is done by a similar guy to Saharan. Why government has not taken any action against Naushad the guy who posted it. Also TID should immediately look into eastern part where tourism is a major concern.

What is this? Who is trying to impose shariah law in Arugambay? Police should probe who was behind it.

I am sure what they meant was thongs. The things that expose the cheeks in full. Have to admit, seeing the cheeks flap in wind is a kind of nasty for anyone.

Ayyoo. Get this tourism thing right once and for all so there is no confusion for tourists. As a woman and mother, I personally support modesty at beaches to make it family friendly and respect the local culture anywhere in the world. But if it is allowed by the host country then no rules are broken. But local rules should be sorted out internally prior to opening up to tourists.

Stupid mentality, good for them to come and surf and spend their money, now we are teaching them what to wear. Why they want the tourists to be wearing shalwars to surf?

I have been going to Arugambay since 2017 , this sign board is not a new thing, I have seen these sign boards on the main road of Arugambay, since I first arrived, There is no need to be still wearing a bikini while walking on the main road , and the local community has no problem with people on the beach surfing and swimming wearing bikinis. But there is no absolute need for people to walk in the main road in their bikinis, there are plenty of shops that's sells bikini throw overs which most of the tourists wear if they have to walk on the main road, or walk in to shops, this whole OST going viral is so stupid, and these sign boards are not a new thing , and still tourism is still thriving here despite this sign board.onli the CHOSEN ones are the people who think it's cool to prance around in there next to nothing attire...

Looks like extremist activity. Bikinis are allowed in all Sri Lankan beaches. No exception. Bikinis are not against any culture in Sri Lanka. So the post is wrong. Police should investigate.

The bikini is for the beach. Not for strolling around towns. Some. of these tourists would stroll around nude in towns if allowed.

This is a unwelcome comment. Leaders of communities that wish to impose their views on others should work with their community to impress on them that we live in one country with the same rules for all communities/ everyone. These sorts of arbitrary actions by activists ultimately impacts all citizens and the economy. If communities wish to change the rules there is a democratic process. That is if the leaders themselves are signed up to the principle of one nation and same rules for everyone.

Men Should Cover Up Monday, 26 May 2025 05:48 AM
if bikinis are to be avoided to be 'respectful' of our culture, then i think men should also cover up their bodies. why should we be exposed to their upper bodies all the time? it's uncomfortable to see the men also walk around almost naked, with gross hair all over their chests and backs. apply the standard of respect to everyone, not just women.

This may be an attempt ,by those who were defeated , to disrupt the foreign income, which will come to the country from tourism . Have a proper investigation and nip this in the bud , before it grows faster.

I do not think half-naked clothng is good for our women or even our men for that matter. It is only the westernised Sri Lankans who would like our women showing off their flesh. If a bikini is OK, is topless OK? Nudist colonies as in some of our beaches and the west?" Is there a price for our standards and dignity?

It's good if people can be dressed modestly because there are families also enjoying the holidays. Tourists also should learn to respect the host country culture. Maybe tourists can be asked to wear a one piece swim suit, rather than a two piece swim suit. Surely there's no harm in that rule, is there? Have heard too many disgusting stories about Arugambay beach!!

The guy who put this post should be severely dealt by the law since this post will never come by one individual but by a planned assault by some forces who want to destroy the tourism industry. Our countrymen are a jealous lot who try to undermine the very industry that is providing the incomes of the far flung villagers who are trying to raise their heads due to many calamities like covid etc. Irrespective of which party one belongs to our people should always applaud what is done in the best of the country and wherever some wrong is done the politicians should be criticized and taken to task that is how some of the countries have attained prosperity. Whilst saying this the ruling politicians should not steamroll the opposing factors which is prevalent in Parliament!

That Naushad guy from Arugambay should be arrested by TID and immidietly investigate if he is going in same track like Saharan. This is a credible threat for national security and tourism. Also heard that in some tourism destinations in eastern has some strict laws where they do not allow selling of liquor and cigarettes. This will haper tourism for sure. So identify the culprits and hang them before it is too late.

western foreigners mostly down here for sun /surf and tanning , mainly women loved to be tanned and show off their friends that they made their vacation to tropical island , tanning skin has a humongus demand in western society specially in white women . that's the main reason they really want to be exposed to the sun as much as possible during their short stay . so that must be part of their routine , if anyone troubled by this , they should seek medical assistance . Restaurants may not allowed swim suites for hygenic reasons, that's fair and square .

Everything in its place! Swimwear should be fine on the beach and pool area. However, even in western countries, general etiquette suggests that elsewhere eg hotel dining areas, shops etc cover ups are worn over swimming costumes or bikinis. Same conduct should be practised here; less embarrassing for families, and more acceptable for our more modest eastern culture.

we don't need dollars from foreign visitors who freely walk shamelessly like DRESSED CHICKEN hanging in "fowl chops" or ( super market freezes) along our streets destroying if not disrespectful of our culture and modesty. Sure we had this "attire" aka (amude) amongst our male farmers about a century back perhaps understandably for convenience if not the display of dignity of labour working in the muddy paddy fields whatever the weather though they never brought in dollars but provided us a daily staple food to survive
