Colombo, July 1 (Daily Mirror) - The National Zoolical Gardens Department has announced a special opportunity for schoolchildren to name the Nile hippopotamus calf recently born at the Dehiwala National Zoological Park as part of the zoo's 90th anniversary celebrations.
The initiative coincides with the Dehiwala Zoo's 90th anniversary, which falls on July 3, 2026, and aims to encourage young animal lovers to engage with wildlife conservation efforts.
According to the department, schoolchildren under the age of 18 will be eligible to submit names for the newborn hippo calf. The naming initiative is expected to generate enthusiasm among children while promoting awareness of wildlife and animal care.
In addition to the naming competition, the department has made arrangements for the public to view the Nile hippo calf for the first time during the anniversary celebrations.
Established in 1936, the Dehiwala Zoo has played a significant role in wildlife conservation, animal welfare, research and environmental education in Sri Lanka over the past nine decades.
The Department has extended an invitation to local and foreign visitors to attend the anniversary celebrations and participate in the special programmes organised to mark the occasion.
