Dehiattakandiya, Dec.4 (Daily Mirror) - Dehiattakandiya Base Hospital is facing a crisis as its only surgeon has left the country, bringing all surgeries to a standstill and leaving patients in desperation.

This concern has been informed to the relevant health authorities by the Hospital Director in the form of a letter, and the actions are yet to be taken.

According to the letter, 50 surgeries have been suspended, including emergency surgeries.

Despite patients being sent to the nearby hospitals, including the Polonnaruwa Hospital, patients face inconvenience due to the congestion prevailing at those hospitals.

As such, the Hospital Director urged the authorities to take immediate action and address this critical situation.

Runaway Surgeon!! with respect to this Govt. hospitals have seen experienced and doctors coming forward to do dire surgeries now and in the past and successful operations were performedwithout waiting for a surgeon. We always value a Govt. hospital with efficient and hardworking staff yesterday, today and tomorrow.

How can you "immediately" address it? You can't produce a surgeon immediately, can you? They go in search of greener pastures and are happy to be there where you must pay taxes, do not get duty free vehicle permits, highly regulated industry, no easy money making avenues and be treated as any other profession/worker. That's how it is in greener pastures.

After dome time only three wheel drivers will be left in the country.

They will be running the show headed by AKD.!! SL will be doomed. Better to lease this country out for about 50 years to China or India just like HK was leased to the British for 99 years.

Getting rid of the corrupt Keheliya and appointing Ramesh as the Health Minister does not seem to have brought the much expected improvements in the Health Sector? Patients are praying for reduction of drug prices which were raised sky high during the Dollar crisis still remain the same. Pharmaceutical Importers held discussions six or seven months ago with Ministry Officials to reduce prices but due to a Mafia operating, this has been silently dropped. Even prices of SPMC products which were increased still remain high.

Until quality of life is improved in remote work locations, professionals will leave. Gov should address the issue much broadly

if your value is not recognised where you are, then why stay?

Induct Indian surgeons and doctors to overcome the shortages.

Will they come for the same salary and same privileges?

    ruwan Monday, 04 December 2023 12:57 PM

Allow re registration of Sri Lankan doctors who have obtained foreign citizenship and do not have dual nationality, to come and work here. They should be allowed to work even as private doctors. It’s jealousy in medicine prevents them from coming back. This is Sri Lanka. Patients suffer.

An average doctor earns ~ 120 000/= per month. After studying so hard if you are only paying such meager salaries no doctor would stay in Sri Lanka unless he has established a good private practice income. Don't fault the doctors for this misery, Increase their salaries.

Thanks to tax mismanagement by the Finance Minister many consultants left the country. FM RW can you provide a solution. It is the poor who suffers and the rich get their services at Private Hospitals and Politicians overseas

    Sujith Monday, 04 December 2023 01:53 PM

Many of medical doctors stayed in the countrt after their univ studies and not left the countrt untill recent economic collapse. Thanks to politicians,we do not see any futre in this country, even after the bankruptcy ,politicians and ministry top levels take bribs and loot public fund. So,we can not blame doctors or any proffesionals leaving the country. But we have another level of qualified doctors .train them to be surgeons.

During the peak of war there were no SriLankan surgeons in the Eastern province. Therefore government arranged some french NGO to serve the people and there were some good sugerns who came and worked in Eastern province on 3 to 6 month shifts. Similar arrangement can be tried if the health minister is smart enough.

    KP Monday, 04 December 2023 02:23 PM

@Lionel, You think you can dissuade doctors by painting a bad picture of what awaits them abroad? All these specialists have worked abroad before as a mandatory part of their training.

Anyone capable will migrate at least to make it better for the children. Look at the recent budget by thay old joker. One of the useless budgets.

sam NY Monday, 04 December 2023 04:49 PM

I wonder to which country these Doctors are migrating. In the USA the SL doctors are not recognized they have to do atleast 4 years in medical school or internship or work as attendants until they pass out of medical school.

LK Dissanayake Tuesday, 05 December 2023 06:04 PM

Mostly Australia and UK these days. The US system is different so one has to do more exams. I would recommend junior doctors to decide which country early in their career to make things smoother.

    Mohan Monday, 04 December 2023 06:44 PM

We may have to redirect the patients to India for surgery.

    kumar Wednesday, 06 December 2023 06:32 AM

Most Govt Doctors provide a dedicated service under trying conditions. But they also face physical assaults and worse remand in prison when the culprits who are politically connected and their administrators walk free, The AG makes pathetic plea for remand of innocents based on crime and not whether the accused are guilty of action. No wonder they prefer to vacate.
