Colombo, January 12 (Daily Mirror) - The Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights Chairman, Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the alleged alteration of Sri Lanka’s State Emblem on the official website of the Ministry of Public Security.
In his complaint, Dr. Sanjeewa said that changing the State Emblem in a manner that brings disrepute to the country is a serious offence that cannot be taken lightly. He called for a comprehensive and independent investigation and for legal action to be taken against those responsible.
Speaking to the media after handing over the complaint, Dr. Sanjeewa said the emblem displayed on the ministry’s website had been changed from the version approved by Parliament, which traditionally includes the lion, Dharma wheel, bo leaves, full moon, sun and moon. He alleged that the altered version presents a distorted image of the national emblem.
He highllighted that such a change could not be attributed to ignorance, noting that even a person with basic knowledge would be aware of the official design of the State Emblem. He described the alteration as a serious insult to the Ministry of Defence and the Sri Lankan state.
Dr. Sanjeewa further warned that the ability to modify the State Emblem in such a manner, whether by someone within the ministry or by an external party, represents a grave threat to national security and the country’s reputation. He also criticised what he described as the failure of authorities to conduct thorough investigations into previous distortions on government websites.
He added that, at a time when the country is facing major issues such as education reforms and changes in the health sector, the alteration of the State Emblem should not be treated as an isolated or minor incident.
