Colombo, March 29 (Daily Mirror) - Minor staffers at the National Hospital Colombo (NHC) have chosen not to wear their uniforms, despite receiving an annual allowance for them, according to an official from the hospital.

These staffers, both male and female, are provided with specific white uniforms for their duties at the hospital to make them easily identifiable. However, instead of wearing these uniforms they allegedly opt for casual attire and behave more like clerical staff or office assistants.

Although they receive an annual uniform allowance of Rs.9,500, they claim this allowance and continue to wear casual clothes. Many of these staffers argue that they cannot perform their duties effectively while wearing uniforms and have reportedly informed the hospital's management about their concerns.

Furthermore, they claim to have received a letter granting permission to wear casual attire while on duty at the hospital.

Following a Ministry-level investigation, disciplinary actions were taken against the staffers after it was discovered that they had been wearing casual clothes based on a letter purportedly issued by a hospital director twenty years ago. Despite the conclusion of the investigations, there has been no apparent change in the dress code of the hospital's minor staffers.

These are usually supported by the JVP. Fire them all for insubordination. How would be if the armed forces and police do too, besides the parliamentarians?

    Charith Friday, 29 March 2024 07:45 AM

Simple. Withdraw the allowance and handout uniforms and make it mandatory to be worn during their working hours. No uniform, then not on duty, and alas no pay.

Privatisation will Wake them Up Friday, 29 March 2024 08:23 AM

Because they know they are indispensable. Should privatise these jobs and see if they behave in the current manner. All these essential services staff know they can demand whatever and whenever they need to.

Well all these people are given jobs by politicians. So I guess that's what you get. Nurses where white attire all the time. Why can't these people ?

Disciplianary action should be instituted against the employees who do not comply to the terms of employment. In the recent past many organizations were able to anticipate this type of behaviour of the minor grades and as such recruitment was handed over to outsourced companies who were free of this type of problem.

These minor staffers of Health who are mostly political appointees, are trying to dictate terms to the entire country who pay their salaries. Cut their uniform allowances if they don't want to wear uniforms.

Discipline to be introduced in SriLanka. Friday, 29 March 2024 11:36 AM

Administration should maintain discipline. If they refuse give them a warning. If not adhered, dismiss and advertise for these posts. Interview applicants and recruit the successful applicants.

    ravin Friday, 29 March 2024 01:23 PM

This may caused another problem for poor patients as you can not identify who is who and get caught to nefarious characters as well as out elements. Strict disciplinary action must be taken against the people who dose not wear their identities.

    sam Friday, 29 March 2024 01:34 PM

Very simple, they do not wish to be identified as minor staff!

    Cherath Friday, 29 March 2024 02:33 PM

This is the result of the culture of lethargic attitudes. Blame the government and politicians no end without any desire to do their part in honest public service while picking up allowances without a murmur. Do the right thing, look the right material before pointing fingers at others. All who do not heed the instructions need to be given an ultimatum before a letter of termination is issued. Enough is enough.

Everyone working in private and public sector should and must wear the identity tag. Their name, occupation clearly to be seen in the tag. This includes in a hospital, from consultants , CEO downwards.

    Mahila Saturday, 30 March 2024 02:51 AM

This is, result of USELESS, INEPT, INCOMPETENTS governing the country!!!???

    Smh Saturday, 30 March 2024 03:45 AM

This is too much by a band of rebels. They need to be disciplined or fired. Everywhere in the world hospital staff wear uniforms and function perfectly fine.

    Ima Saturday, 30 March 2024 06:51 AM

Health department should not bow down to unethical demands of minor staff, this seem behaving like mafia and a lot connected with illegal activities including drug dealing, due to timid soft behavior of senior administration this high handed demands popping up without ending, public demanding, either they wear uniform or leave the job
