Children to name Ridiyagama lion cubs: Visit park on Feb 4 to see them

Colombo, January 22 (Daily Mirror) - Children will have the opportunity to suggest names to six newly born lion cubs at the Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambantota, Assistant Director of the park Hemantha Samarasekera said.

He shared these details during a media briefing on the six lion cubs held yesterday (21).

The lion cubs, which include five females and one male, were born approximately three months ago at the Ridiyagama Safari Park.

Starting today, children can submit their name suggestions till February 2.

The names submitted by the children will be selected and announced on February 4 during the exhibition. Arrangements have been made by the Wildlife Department to award prizes to the winners.

The five female and one male lion cubs were born to a lioness named Dora and her mother Lara, at the Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambantota about three months ago.

Veterinary officers at the park confirmed that the cubs are now eating solid food, such as meat, in addition to their mother’s milk. They are reportedly in excellent health.

The lion cubs have been vaccinated and are being prepared for the public exhibition scheduled for February 4, following recommendations from the veterinary team.

However, visitors will not be allowed to touch the cubs, the Deputy Director said.

The Safari Park has planned to offer the public the rare opportunity to name the cubs before they are presented to the public.

Accordingly, name suggestions can be submitted through the Ridiyagama Safari Park’s official Facebook page, via Messenger or by post, Samarasekera said.
