Cannabis cultivations unearthed inside Yala Sanctuary

Colombo, Nov. 23 (Daily Mirror) - Three large-scale cannabis cultivations have been uncovered in the Gonagan Ara area of the Yala Sanctuary during a special four-day operation carried out by Police.

According to Police, over 200,000 cannabis plants and more than 50 kilograms of dried cannabis were seized from the site. The illegal cultivations had reportedly spread across five acres, three acres, and two acres of land within the protected area.

Police said that all three cultivations were completely destroyed during the raid.

This cultivation cannot happen without the knowledge of the Park Warden and his staff. Remove the cultivation and give different areas earmarked for the staff to be responsible for these illegal activities and report to Park warden in writing with a log book entry. Warden must be responsible for the etire park whether such activities are reported or not

The state needs to give the drug mafia a shock and legalize drugs. Educate the kids not to consume it. Sold in control centers as a cure to existing drug addicts. Light drugs are legal in many countries.

Even though these illegal cultivations are destroyed. Some racketeers are engaged in cultivating the cannabis under the pretext of chena cultivation. Certain shrewd farmers who are cultivating the sweet pumpkin and watermelon for their means of living are growing the cannabis in a camouflaging manner very surreptitiously that can't be identified by anyone easily. Unfortunately certain wildlife officers forest officers and even police officers are knowingly supporting these illegal practices
