Colombo, March 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet endorsed a proposal to draft constitutional amendments for the introduction of a new parliamentary electoral system that will enable the election of 160 MPs under the previous First-Past-the –Post System and the remainder under proportional representation, Daily Mirror learns.
Currently, Parliament consists of 225 MPs.
Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe presented the proposal approved by the Cabinet. A new piece of legislation will be drafted for enactment by Parliament giving effect to the constitutional changes required for the purpose. It will be a hybrid electoral system.
In the past, the successive governments attempted to bring changes to the current electoral system which is solely based on proportional representation and preferential voting.

This should not be an excuse to postpone the parliamentary elections. These should be held on time and people should be given an opportunity to express their opinions. In brief, the voice of the people that has been suppressed should be heard.

Good thing. How long will it take Will the 225 mps vote for loosing their party leader guaranteed seats at the next elections. Although all citizens wish for this change it will be blocked in the Parliament due to self interests.

This too would be another bill that will violate various clauses of the constitution. This is the common element we have seen in all Wijedasa Rajapasksha presented bills.

Why do we need 225? Can anyone explain that? Why not 200? These jokers must be reduced so that the debt burden can be also reduced.

Reduce the number of MP's to 100 and the cabinet members to 18, period.
