Cabinet approves contract for new BIA departure terminal expansion

Colombo, July 14 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the awarding of the contract for the construction of a new building with 36 check-in counters and six boarding gates at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, as part of efforts to expand the airport's passenger handling capacity.

The project involves the construction of a new facility connecting the departure terminal directly to aircraft and is expected to enhance passenger processing and boarding operations.

Cabinet approval to commence the procurement process for the project was granted at its meeting on February 9, 2025, under the airport infrastructure development programme.

An international competitive bidding process was subsequently conducted, attracting three bids. Following a comprehensive evaluation, the Standing High Level Procurement Committee submitted its recommendations to the Cabinet.

Based on those recommendations, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation to award the contract to M/s Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd., which was identified as the lowest substantially responsive bidder.
