Colombo, July 8 (Daily Mirror) - The Committee for Protecting Rights of Prisoners (CPRP) has called for an immediate end to the alleged torture of inmates transferred from Negombo Prison to other correctional facilities following recent unrest.
In a press release, the organization's Chairman, Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera, expressed grave concern over reports that transferred inmates were being subjected to severe physical abuse.
According to the CPRP, information received by the organization indicates that inmates transferred to Angunakolapelessa Prison have allegedly been brutally assaulted, with some reportedly suffering broken legs and serious injuries, including severe wounds to their backs.
Describing the allegations as deeply alarming, the CPRP urged prison authorities to immediately investigate the claims and, if found to be true, take urgent steps to stop all forms of violence against inmates.
The organization also called for prompt medical treatment for those injured and demanded assurances for the safety and security of all prisoners transferred from Negombo Prison.
