COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - While marking the discontinuation of the conventional practice of issuing printed paper bills, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is implementing the CEB e-billing system for their consumers in many areas, CEB media spokesman and Engineer Noel Priyantha said.
Accordingly, the e-billing system will be introduced to customers in the Dehiwala, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Matara and Ambalangoda areas.
The people in these areas will exclusively receive their electricity bills in a digital format, such as SMS or email.
"We also encourage our customers countrywide to promptly register for this convenient service, as the issuing of printed paper bills will gradually be suspended in the coming months," Noel Priyantha added.
Consumers are requested to register via SMS through the following instructions: Type REG<space>followed by your CEB Account number and send to 1987.
Those who are willing to register online are requested to visit http://ebill.ceb.lk and follow the instructions.
The CEB requests for the consumer's attention and cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of the e-billing system.
This e-billing system is expected to save approximately 100 million sheets of paper annually.
In light of this significant environmental impact, the CEB invites all its customers to join in embracing this digital transformation and taking advantage of CEB's digital services ahead of the mandatory rollout.

I have a suggestion. CEB can arrange for the consumer to read the meter and send it to CEB, by SMS, email or in an app. Then the computed bill can be paid by the consumer. CEB can make periodic verifications to see consumers are not cheating. This way they can cut down the meter readers to about a sixth of the present strength.

LECO has already implemented this and it works wonderfully. Such a hassle free system. Meter readers discourage this totally saying that nobody will take responsibility if bills are not sent on time! Don't listen to them! It's not true. The bill comes right on time on the 1st of every month and you can pay instantly. Wonder when the Water Board will introduce this system? At the moment their e-billing means, once the meter reader physically issues the bill, after a day or two, he sends it in a SMS to your phone. That's not e-billing! That's double work, probably involves payment of overtime too!

Great work guys. Please use the digital meters to auto read the meters too. Also aks consumers to send the meter reading. Do random checks time to time. Make sure at least once a year a hole hold get visited. Anyone who is willing to cheat are the ones who wants corrupt politians too. People need to be good to find good politians.
