Colombo,May 29 (Daily Mirror) - In light of the Central Bank’s ability to manage foreign reserve, the governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe stressed the importance of easing vehicle restrictions.

Addressing the media, he emphasized that the government must determine whether to resume vehicle imports following the Central Bank's announcement of adequate foreign reserves.

He further mentioned that the government had been concentrating on resuming vehicle imports gradually, with specific vehicle categories already permitted for the tourism industry.

You must be owner of 2-3 vehicles and a selfish guys like the ones sitting in the parliment .every family deserves a decent affordable vehcile to commute .if there is traffic there should be high road taxes in peak ours to reduce the same . Srilanka is one of the highest taxing countries for vehicle import .which is unfair .if every family can afford a vehicle cities will not become too crowded

What nonsense is the Central Bank talking of easing the import of vehicles. First and foremost work out a mechanism of reducing the cost of living. When the rates of interest were high the Central Bank assured in 6 months hence that by reducing the rates of interest inflation will fall down gradually. Do a market survey and ascertain whether the cost of living has dropped. The only think we observe the government has only assisted in reducing the interest rates thus robbing the depositors monies and providing all these big corporates etc to make profits check their year end balance sheets. Depositors have become beggars especially those who have deposited their terminal benefits thus living a hand to mouth living. The government through the Central Bank is filling the pockets of the rich whilst reducing the middle classes to beggars. Today the government is frightened to go for elections giving different reasons because they know it will be a complete whitewash!!!!!!!

Up until the elections are over, no single vehicle emport should be required, given a real economic focus considering the poverty stricken population facing untold hardships. As a responsible government entity, the CBSL should act accountable. If you do so, another ARAGALAYA will be inevitable.

Yeah, right!! What a joke, foreign reserves are USD 5 Billion out of which 1.5B is the conditional loan from China (only for trade with China) that leaves 3.5B in hand just enough for 3 months imports of essential items!!! The last full year that vehicle imports were permitted, we spent over 2 Billion on imports! Now with pent up demand this could go way beyond that figure! We are not paying back loans, ISB's etc so we can build up sufficient resources to be able to pay them back when our defferd time is up! Best case scenario is that a small number of vehicles (cars
