CBK back in the fray to lead SLFP-LED People’s Alliance

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has reinstated the membership of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, enabling her to lead the party-dominated Podujana Eksath Peramuna (People’s Alliance), the Daily Mirror learns.

SLFP leader former President Maithripala Sirisena has already informed Ms. Kumaratunga about the membership reinstatement. The party has now decided to revive the People’s Alliance under its chair symbol. The alliance was originally formed ahead of the general election in 1994 as a move to defeat the 17-year rule of the United National Party (UNP). The People’s Alliance remained in power until 2001 when it was defeated by the UNP again.

In 2004, the SLFP took the lead in forming the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Since then, the People’s Alliance remained idle in politics. In what appeared to be a new political development ahead of the presidential elections, it will be revived with Ms. Kumaratunga as the leader.

However, all decisions will be taken by the Leadership Council to be formed in due course. At a recent meeting, the People’s Alliance decided to amend its constitution enabling various independent groups to join it in addition to recognized political parties. According to the previous constitution, the SLFP, as the key ally, held 51 percent stake in the People’s Alliance. It is now going to be reduced to 50 per cent.

Perhaps trying to save the benefits she is currently enjoying as a former president

Bernard Jayatilake Saturday, 03 February 2024 10:17 AM

In the present day politics in this country voters are averse to return the old faces as they have had bitter experience with them and the SLFP is trying to revive it after its leader, the ex-president is accused and found guilty for dereliction of duty on the Easter Sunday carnage and the party can, at least save its deposit if he leaves the party.

This is a do or die battle to save the imminent loose of perks and privileges in the face NPP victory. These old and stale vine how ever much they fill in new bottles people of this country could identify.

We will all lose our livelihoods, money and lives under an NPP victory and forthcoming North Korea-Cuba-Venezuela communist regime, so let us all sane humans pray for their defeat.

Yes the NPP is our only hope to rescue the country from these virmin.

NPP/JVP is a party collecting and piling files with no action even with their ministries since 2004 to 2005 with Chandrika to talk about. Nothing even a policy for that matter. But, another, taken tangible action while being in the opposition. No walk the talk which is sensational.

Good that Chandrika is returning to active politics!!! A full-blooded politician with enormous political experience, not only nationally but also internationally, who almost all young politicians who are supposed to solve the country's pending problems cannot hold a candle to! And if you look at the presidential candidates mentioned so far and compare them with Chandrika, then the verdict is easily in their favor!!! Statements like young politicians should take power because they are unencumbered and are doing better than the old ones contain too many unknowns! Sri Lanka should not experiment in this regard! The country cannot afford that! Sri Lanka needs people like Chandrika Kumaratunga or the somewhat older Sarath Fonseka in politics right now, they cannot be replaced by anyone younger!!!

The worst President the country ever had.

    Man Sunday, 04 February 2024 06:13 AM

One of the worst with dictatorship. Just recollect the provincial council election in 1996.

Fahim mufakkir [Fahim reasons] Saturday, 03 February 2024 05:22 PM

When will Sri Lankan voters ever recognize the reality that it's not about changing politicians or political parties; it is about changing the system. This means totally scrapping the present representative constitution and drafting a new one. If you hand over the country with the same system and it falls into the wrong hands, you bid goodbye to your much-touted democracy. By the way, replacing politicians with the young is not the right wisdom. Sri Lankan culture needs mature politicians; age is never a barrier in politics. If you have the right system, among those politicians with experience who sincerely want to reproduce themselves, will continue, and the rest will drop out by themselves. This time, none of the voters can complain if they go ahead with the election without completing the system change. This is my strong challenge. No matter who the politician is or which political party, bragging will never achieve anything they promise with the same system in place.

If CBK runs for president, trust me, she will win with a better margin, despite all negative comments. It's time to learn to accept reality. Future politics will be shaped with a lot of changes; I doubt people will consider political parties that have preacher politicians as members.

This is the woman who pulled the rug under Ranil when she was president and he was prime minister, merely for cheap political gains. The upward path and trajectory the country was on was deliberately sabotaged by her. Now she has regained leadership of the People's Alliance and is looking for sound bite to announce her return. She is quite capable of disrupting the fragile economic recovery for her political games, as she did before.

@Fahim Muffakir; What is your drafted system change? Please publish. It is not the system change but the individuals that matter. That' why there was a difference of rule between Mr. D B and JR or Chandrika or Mahinda or Ranil.

My friend-Man, let us contemplate the unfolding events. Naturally, I acknowledge that, akin to yourself, a significant portion of society has yet to grasp the profound importance of changing our existing system. Furthermore, I am cognizant that my solitary voice lacks the potency to sway a voting populace exceeding 15 million, where the collective will for systemic change appears to be absent.

CBK echoes 1996 Wayamba election thuggery, Thawakkal cement factory deal, Channel Nine deal, killing Satana paper editor, etc. Deals for commissions. So a continuation of dictatorship in leaps and bound. My3, would have been a better choice as nothing to accuse as such.

    Aba Saranai to the party.

Fahim mufakkir [Fahim reasons] Sunday, 04 February 2024 09:39 AM

In contemplating the current political landscape, I echo the sentiment that embracing change is crucial. The need for a people-participating constitution is evident. To change the current constitution from indirect democracy to semi-democracy is essential. Without this crucial change, the election will be a defeat for the people.

Fahim Mufakkir [Fahim reasons] Sunday, 04 February 2024 09:46 AM

What Sri Lanka needs is a leader who is brave enough to change the system without caring about who it offends. The late Hon. LKY's success was that people getting offended did not bother him or stop him because he didn't care about his personal political agendas. The only thing that mattered to him was Singapore and its people. He lived and worked for Singapore and its people, succeeding with the support of his true party members and, of course, the people who had the will. You can never please all the people; there will always be some who will never be satisfied. I am talking about a very negligible percentage, an irrelevant segment.

Fahim Mufakkir [Fahim reasons] Sunday, 04 February 2024 11:00 AM

I have been asking just two questions since the Aragalaya, and no one has answered: 1. Could someone clarify the meaning of "System Change" as championed by Aragalaya? 2. Regarding trust in those you elect, what happens if they fail? How would you navigate this within the current system and constitution? Once you elect your representatives and send them to the parliament, the people lack a sovereign to hold them accountable. Only the opposition can, but there's a concern about having a weak opposition with lower numbers against the government.

"You don't simply substitute a proficient and seasoned horseman when the horse is ailing; rather, you exchange the horse. If the horseman cannot adeptly ride a different steed, then you replace the horseman with someone capable of mastering the art. Unfortunately, the prevailing Sri Lankan cultural inclination of placing the cart before the horse demands a transformation." ©Fgknt
