CAASL commissions solar power system to meet 70% of power needs

Colombo, July 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has commissioned a solar photovoltaic (PV) system at its five-storey headquarters, enabling the Authority to meet more than 70% of its electricity requirements through renewable energy.

The solar power system was inaugurated by Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake.

The project was implemented under the guidance of CAASL Director General and Chief Executive Officer Captain Daminda Rambukwella in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) policies promoting green aviation, energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction.

According to the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, the solar PV system will also enable excess electricity generated by the Authority to be supplied to the national power grid.

The ministry said the initiative is expected to save the Authority approximately Rs. 24 million annually by reducing electricity costs while helping conserve public funds through the use of renewable energy.

It added that the project reinforces the CAASL's commitment to environmentally sustainable aviation, noting that ICAO encourages the adoption of renewable energy to minimise the environmental impact of the aviation sector.

The CAASL said it plans to expand the use of renewable energy in future civil aviation projects as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.
