Businessman arrested at BIA with undeclared foreign currency worth Rs. 22.4 million

Colombo, Feb. 2 (Daily Mirror) - A Sri Lankan air passenger who allegedly attempted to illegally bring into the country and remove a stock of foreign currency valued at over Rs. 22.4 million through the “Green Channel” at the arrival terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, was arrested by airport Customs officers on the morning of February 2.

The suspect is a 48-year-old businessman residing in Akurana, Kandy.

According to Customs officials, the passenger arrived at the Katunayake Airport from Bangalore, India, at around 8.00 a.m. on IndiGo Airlines flight 6E-1183. He was intercepted while attempting to exit the arrival terminal without declaring the foreign currency, using the Green Channel designated for passengers with nothing to declare.

During the inspection, Customs officers seized EUR 48,900, US$ 14,000, and Indian Rupees 26,650, which were allegedly concealed among his belongings.

The suspect has been detained by Katunayake Airport Customs, and further investigations are currently underway into the incident.
