Bus accident injures 18 passengers

At least 18 passengers were injured when the Nuwara Eliya-bound bus from Colombo veered off the road and fell into a precipice at Watawala, 63 kms from Hatton, on the Hatton-Colombo main highway in the early hours of last morning.

The bus belonging to Nuwara Eliya depot that left Colombo at midnight on Monday with a full complement of 120 passengers was scheduled to arrive in Nuwara Eliya at 6 a.m. yesterday.

The injured were admitted to the Watawala District Hospital and transferred for further treatment to the Nawalapitiya Base Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital said several of the injured had sustained fractures. The driver and the conductor had sustained minor injuries, but they were taken in for questioning.

Meanwhile, the passengers said the bus developed technical defects on the way. Watawala police are conducting further investigations. (Gamini Ilangatilleka)

Reckless driver, speed, tiredness, drugs are the causes for this accident. Further bad mechanical condition of the bus, especially balled tyres and brakes could have contributed to this terrible accident. One or two may blame INDIA !!

Bus taking off at midnight for journey through mountains and sharp bends has all the ingredients for a probable catastrophe. Faulty/dodgy mechanics shortens the odds even further. Sleepiness is at its peak during midnight to 6. Suggest the last bus either way to be no later than 6pm.

I am sure speed would have been a cause as well. Unfortunately there is a simple solution to control speed - speed control unit, but the Minister is asleep and does not enforce the requirement of a speed control unit in all buses.
