Brothel allegedly run by popular actress raided in Kandy

A brothel operated from a house in Mapanawatura in Kandy, suspected to be run by a popular actress was raided by the police yesterday and seven suspects including four women were taken into custody.

The Kandy Division Crime Investigation Unit who carried out the raid said that they had carried it out on a tip-off received from the public.

Police said the consumer’s name on the electricity bill was similar to that of the actress but it was yet to be confirmed whether she was the owner of the house. They said steps would be taken to produce the electricity bill and obtain a court order to summon the individual named in the electricity bill to the police to record a statement.

A senior police official said the absconding manager of the brothel had been informed to surrender to the police and to produce the agreement with the owner over the rent or lease of the house. (Shane Seneviratne)

What has the electricity bill got to do with the worlds oldest profession? May be they can provide power to a few houses in the neighbourhood with their electrifying performances.

Raids on brothels is not a good move, it is a violation of human rights, violence against women, in Thailand, Philippines women roam naked, serve food in hotels naked, it has become natural all over the world, we are like primitive people raiding brothels, the minister incharge of police should issue a circular to hand-off brothels, recently a women who left the child on train, arrested by the police, was subject to condemnation by the civil society, violence against women should be protected, they are our sisters, mothers, respect vulnerable women. Police can raid illicit liquor booths and attend to prevention of crimes, traffic violations etc; police seem to enjoy raiding brothels to have fun.

It seems that Electricity bill from CEB has become probably, one of the most valuable legal document in squatter friendly towns in Sri lanka especially in Jaffna . They can be used to dislodge the rightful owner of the house out with the assistance of local "guardians of the law" ( local court, government agents or anyone who holds reins of power). By the way, life has become really tough for these women to embrace the oldest profession in the world. We should show some sympathy for these folks, at the same time, law and order should be maintained and there should be consequences for engaging in illegal profession regardless of what other countries do.
