COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Chairman of the Central Environment Authority (CEA) Supun S. Pathirage was arrested by the Bribery Commission officials a short while ago for soliciting a bribe of Rs.10 million from a person in order to issue a permit, police said.

A senior official attached to the Police Headquarters told the Daily Mirror the CEA Chairman was arrested by a team of commission’s detectives, whilst he was accepting the money at a location in Colombo last evening.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the suspect had demanded the sum to facilitate a person with a forged document related to the environmental authority.

Director Investigation Division of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) told the Daily Mirror that the inquiries were underway as he had just returned to the country following a brief overseas visit.

They said that the businessman initially informed the matter to Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, who directed the businessman to the Bribery Commission. Later the CEA Chairman, a former Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councillor and another were arrested.

This is the level of corruption in sl. Country where ministers, government officials, officers related to legal fields are famous for accepting bribes and top level corruption. Still imf jokers funding this government without forcing government to minimize these kinds of corruption.

This is not the first time this Chairmen has accepted bribe. Generally the CEA is famous for bribe. They have been maintaining this tradition for a long time. Any project where approval is needed from CEA there is no way any investor or developer can get a clearance without bribe . Most of the senior officials and chairmen accept bribes. It's an open secarat.

Officials of all authorities who have the power to grant a license always do so only after accepting bribes. This is evident form the luxury life they lead.

    Cineha Saturday, 11 November 2023 11:10 AM

Now who appointed him to this high post? The ministerial power or the executive power?

This calls for a 4th floor hours of daily grilling until he spits out all details of his request for a bribe and who else was to benefit. I cannot believe how the country has been dragged down by several persons and not a single case has been brought to the COURTS. I see NO light at the end of the tunnel for the country, until all dishonest individuals are brought before a COURT OF LAW and a INDEPENDENT BODY with NO political interference is set up to investigate each and EVERY allegation that has been brought to light in the previous decade of the Rajapaske led government.
