Ratnapura, June 11 (Daily Mirror) -A family that sought refuge at the residence of a leading gem businessman in Ratnapura after being affected by the floods have allegedly stolen gemstones valued Rs.25 million, according to the police.

The flood-hit family- father, mother and son- was hosted by the businessman with meals for two days. The family was arrested by the Ratnapura Police Special Investigation Division.

After the floodwaters subsided, the family had left with the promise to return to assist in cleaning the businessmen’s house.

They had arrived after a few days. In the process of cleaning the house, they had removed gemstones.

However, their act of theft had been caught on CCTV camera. They had admitted to the theft. They are now to be produced before the Ratnapura Magistrate.

Yes, this really happens in SL. I'm a foreigner, resident for many yrs, and helped a few SL families, by paying some for their kids' higher education, now they have good jobs. But their parents were so angry when we stopped supporting them as my kids needed more money for their education, they blamed us so much and said terrible things to other people, as if we were criminals. Since then we stopped supporting people in SL, as we were unable to understand their way of thinking. I feel sorry for this businessman. Wish him and his family good health.

The customary answer of the so called wise and elite would be '..oh they must have been poor and in desparate need due to corruption by politicians'. NO! You do the right thing because it's the only good thing to do. If each do what is right (not waiting for others to do likewise), the whole world will be doing right.

Were these precious gems in a safe in the house ? If so how could this family come to know the code to open the safe ?...Was this family known to the Gem Merchant when he chose to help them out ? Well why tempt the poor leaving your valuables around ?....this is why insurance does not pay if we do not take maximum care of our valuables ..
