Colombo, March 18 (Daily Mirro) - Due to the imposition of taxes on ingredients used for bakery products, the sale of bakery items such as bread has decreased, chairman of the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection, Ranjith Vithanage said.
He told the Daily Mirror that a tax of Rs. 50 has been imposed on imported wheat flour, egg prices have increased and a Rs. 6,000 tax has been imposed on a kilo of margarine.
Therefore, since the prices of bakery items have increased, the sale of bread has decreased by 40 percent, and the sale of other bakery products has come down by 25 percent. Also, an 18 percent tax has been imposed on bakery items except bread.
Under this situation, 10 percent of the bakeries have closed, said Vithanage and added that bakery owners did not reduce the prices of bakery items, even though the electricity charges were reduced by 21.9 percent.

People have reduce the quantity person who eat half a loaf reduce to qouter and whole loaf to half a loaf due to high price factor its not with only bread all other basic meals and essentials for the past few years everthing that basic human consume have ridiculously have gone up in price local produce and imports every local made brands have increased with approx 200% to 400% which will decline in qountity and turnover majority people in the country are middle-class and poor have many difficulties just to keep the home FIRE BURNING...

Some bakeries are closing down and some other bakeries are opening. So this is how the market forces work. Don't make a political mess of the situation. What the politicians (Including the president) is not saying is that the country is not out of trouble yet. If we need US$6billion per year to settle liabilities and we only have a reserve of 4Billion dollars it means we are yet in trouble. Due to the elections even RW is falsely portraying as if we are safe, but is is not so, we are going in the right direction but we have to have a control on the imports.

Couldn't agree with you more but to even boil some Kadala or Mung Hetta(Green Gram) we still need gas and the cost of gas is not cheap either. People live find some wood to burn but people in urban areas all switched to gas from wood fire.

Quite honestly, bakery products are one food group that is killing this nation. Refined flour, sugar, oil and margarine. A combination for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, inflammation in the body. The list goes on and on. .

Bread is far too expensive.... before we need 3 loafs of bread for family dinner with dhal or soya, now we eat rice, red rice... its much healthier!

The president's target is to collect higher tax rates. If there are less sales then how will you reach your tax targets. That was not thought of when increasing taxes and price of goods.
