BASL to boycott courts on Monday over Akuregoda lawyer killing

Colombo, Feb. 15 (Daily Mirror) - The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has decided to abstain from court proceedings across the country tomorrow (16) following the recent shooting to death of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda.

The decision was taken at a General Assembly meeting held in Colombo today (15), where members convened to discuss the next course of action in response to the killings.

Addressing the media after the meeting, BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said the General Assembly unanimously adopted four key resolutions.

Accordingly, the Association resolved to urge the government to put an end to what it described as a prevailing culture of killings in the country and to ensure the safety of the public.

It was also unanimously decided that all lawyers would refrain from engaging in professional activities in courts islandwide on Monday as a mark of protest.

So extra money as cases postponed and another days fees from litigant. Just like the Doctors asking only for themselves - vultures all. When other citizens are shot the lawyers are happy as a new case for them but just one of their kind killed and boycotts start.

I never heard BASL condemning the action of former chief justice giving favourable judgments to the president. BASL had no comments on former CJ'S skullduggery acts. As you know lawyers like sharks never attack on their own.

Cases get postponed for months. Some clients like the cases to be postponed and some others like to see them determined early. Those who like to have them determined early to go overseas or having returned from overseas for the case will be very unhappy. This is like the Doctors striking putting off long awaited surgeries to the dissatisfaction of the sick. I do not know when these parasites will show Empathy, compassion, humanity etc to the public.

What do Lawyers achieve by abstaining? Nothing. Lawyers behave similar to children. If the perpetrators live next door, you can arrest them overnight. At onetime there was a man hunt for Yakkdaya (iron man) who killed Maradankadawala Postmaster and robbed the money. Manhunt went on for months, finally he was cought travelling in a bus. You have to be patient until perpetrators are arrested. In my observation, none has come up with a solution. All are condemning and slipping away from their responsibility. Point blankly say, do this or that,dear lawyers fraternity.
