Ashoka Ranwala’s driving license temporarily suspended

Gampaha, Dec 20 (Daily Mirror) - Mahara Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe yesterday (19) ordered the temporary suspension of the driving license of former Speaker and Gampaha District Parliamentarian Ashoka Ranwala following the accident in Sapugaskanda.

Ranwala is accused of causing a car accident in the Sapugaskanda area on December 11, which left three people, including an infant injured.

The Magistrate also directed that Ranwala be produced before the National Transport Medical Institute to undergo a driving fitness test and submit a report to the court.

The suspect did not appear in court yesterday, with his lawyer stating that he was still receiving hospital treatment.

Police told the court that urine and blood samples collected during Ranwala’s hospitalisation were sent to the Government Analyst to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

The suspect’s lawyer told the court that Rs. 50,000 had been given to the woman whose leg was injured and Rs. 25,000 each to the injured baby and his mother. The Magistrate clarified that since the case is still pending, the court cannot order compensation, but if the plaintiff agrees to accept it, the court will not intervene.

The husband of the injured woman told the court that he is not willing to accept the money.

The Magistrate questioned why the suspect, who was not injured, remained hospitalised, to which the lawyer replied that it was due to Ranwala’s poor health.

The case was scheduled for January 16 for further hearings.

The temporary suspension of his licence appears to be nothing more than an eyewash. He is already an innocent victim, as his blood test report came back clean, despite the victims alleging that he was driving drunk and collided with their vehicle, causing serious injuries to the passengers. Either the victims are lying, or they were too immature to judge drunkenness based merely on appearance and behaviour. At the scene, the police reportedly found that their stock of breathalyzer kits had been depleted, and therefore no on-site test was conducted. Considering all these facts, one must conclude that the victims were at fault, and it is their licence that should be permanently cancelled. As matters currently stand, the ruling party politicians appear to be entirely spotless, with no shortcomings identified in any of them.

System Change is working at a great speed. Hope it will not be caught is speeding. When going at high speed the drivers/prosecutors tend to make mistakes leaving room for the offenders to escape

So Ranwala is trying to pay the victims just Rs 25000 which is good enough for one meal at a good restaurant. Wonder if that money comes from flood compensation funds as tge amounts are similar. Everyday , everything else in the case are being found guilty except Ranawala, this time the Driving Licence is guilty. Ranwala's car was found guilty , police were found guilty, the victims were found guilty but Ranawala is not guilty. That is the system change.

Ashoka Ranwala ; You are a well educated person; therefore please be honest and speak the truth. Looking at you, I see you are as a healthy person contrary to your lawyer's claim that your health is poor.
