Former Speaker and MP Ashoka Ranwala has been arrested in connection with the accident in Sapugaskanda last night.

Police said the MP was arrested on charges of reckless driving and failure to avoid an accident.

He is receiving treatment at the National Hospital, Colombo.

It’s best he resigns to take accountability for the s accident. Need to send a clear message that anyone found negligent on the roads are not fit run in politics too. Lives are at stake both on the roads and in politics! AKD must show that he means business and any shortcomings from any member of NPP must be removed. Police must check him thoroughly to see whether he was drunk , if not it’s ok , if it’s , hope the judge will remand him for 14 days. No one in the government will interfere with the law which is taking place properly.

This is a good example that positions are no safe guards to escape the law. But in my mind reckless driving or failure to avoid an accident are not offences to be arrested when no injury is caused to anyone. If at all the offender is released on Police bail. This arrest could be to warn the public the consequences of poor driving skills.

What is the point in having an alcohol test after more than 24 hours? He was shrewd to escape the Police and also drive to the hospital and then take a wheel chair. At least now, Malimawa should expel him.
