Colombo, Feb. 18 (Daily Mirror) - Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka informed Parliament that he has resigned from the Select Committee of Parliament probing the release of 323 containers, on his own accord whereas the Opposition claimed that he did so due to their request.
The Minister told Parliament that the Speaker appointed him as a member of the committee to look into and report to Parliament on the release of 323 containers from the Port of Colombo without undergoing mandatory physical inspection and submit its proposals and recommendations when he was functioning as the Minister of Urban Development.
The Minister said he decided to resign as it is a conflict of interest to function as a member of the committee as he now functions as the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman said the Minister resigned as Opposition members objected to the Minister functioning as a member of the Committee as institutions directly under his Ministry have to be summoned before the committee.
However, Minister Karunathilake said he resigned not due to the request of the Opposition but on his own accord.
