Any company or industry that can pay in US Dollars can open a consumer account at Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to obtain a weekly guaranteed fuel quota, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera today.

He said they need to pay a month in advance and fuel will be issued on a daily or weekly basis from July 12. "Already paid customers will receive their quota from the 12th” Minister said.

This is a highly unethical move. To start with from where did the companies get the dollars? If they are export earnings then all that should go to the treasury to be used intelligently to import the fuel with priority given to export earning companies to get their quota. Otherwise the rights of the citizens who own the national assets used by such companies to earn the dollars in the first place
