Anura Yapa’s arrest: Small fish netted, big sharks roam free: Champika Ranawaka

Colombo, Jan 23 (Daily Mirror) - Referring to the arrest of former MP and Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and his spouse, United Republican Front (URF) leader Patali Champika Ranawaka said though the government is expected to arrest fraudster Arjuna Mahendran, those responsible for the economic crisis and the e-Visa scam, it had embarked on a political witch-hunt.

Delivering remarks to the media, he said ‘the Anura –Harini government’, in the wake of its dismal failure to lower prices of coconut and rice, and taxation on fuel, has resorted to populist measures of this nature to placate the masses.

He said the latest arrest is an act of cowardice taken in fear of the opposition being organised.

“The Anura-Harini government, as its first act of political hounding, has arrested Yapa and his spouse.  They came to power with the promise to arrest Arjuna Mahendran and institute legal action against the bond scam. We thought criminal charges would be filed against those responsible for the economic crisis and politicians responsible for the e-Visa scam,” he said.

The arrest of Yapa and his spouse is pure political vendetta, Ranawaka charged.
