Adani wind power projects not cancelled: Government

Colombo, January 25 (Daily Mirror)- The government has not taken any decision to cancel the Adani wind power projects in Mannar and Pooneryn as reported by some media, Cabinet spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa said today.

He told a special media conference that the government has only annulled a Cabinet decision taken by the previous government to sign a power purchasing agreement with the Adani Group.

The Minister said the government has appointed a committee to review the project and renegotiate the pricing with the Adani Group.

"The government is considering the energy requirement and whether we can purchase power at an affordable price. The committee is discussing these matters. There are five ongoing court cases regarding the matter and we are awaiting their decision as well," he said.

Not cancelled but if the negotiations on the pricing fails it will be cancelled. Adani cannot charge more than what he is charging India.

Government should cancel regardless. Renewable energy is 3 times more expensive than building a coal fired power plant. In 20-30 years, all the money is gone to waste when they need new wind mills and solar panels. That's their typical life span and while a coal fired power plant last much more.

When India is building coal power plants around the country rapidly to meet the demand, no point in Sri Lanka spending more money to go green. All the smoke from Indian power plants in South India going to end up here anywhere. Renewable energy in Sri Lanka only makes sense once India phases out all gas and coal power plants in their country. If it wasn't for our only coal power plant holding the base load of the country 900mw, half the country would be in dark. Wind mills and solar power can only produce power when there is strong wind and sunlight. It can only be used as a auxiliary power source.

Adani Wind Power Project will continue with some trivial correction in the price SL Government has to pay for electricity. It will be still much higher than what India has to pay. Adani has been thrown out from US because of corruption. NPP Government still wants Adani projects in Sri Lanka.

Adani could build these in South India and we could import power from such on contracts as suitable. Land is a resource which is in short supply in SL. Corrupt politicians have got a foothold on this project as is. These plants do not provide appreciable job opportunities for Sri Lankans. Opportunities for corruption would be drastically reduced in that way of procurement.

"Annulled not cancelled"! Annulled, often used in matters relating to a marriage, means: "to declare or make legally invalid or void". Accordingly it tantamounts to being cancelled? As politicians walking a tight rope where sensitivities in diplomatic relationships are involved - words are used to soften the severity of decisions I guess. Hope this minister is learnered adequately and has chosen the words that best difuse a sensitive issue!!

Yes! Adani Power Project will go ahead. Decision has been already made by PM Modi. NPP Government is making a show as Local Government and Provincial Council elections are near. Adani Company charges from India 5.15 US Cents per unit, but Sri Lanka has to pay US Cents 7.45 per unit This Government will agree to Adani Project after making trivial changes to these prices like India will have to pay US Cents 6.01 per unit and Sri Lanka will have to pay US Cents 6.98 per unit.
