AG’s Dept to file case in Singapore demanding compensation over X-Press Pearl damage

The Attorney General's Department has decided to file a case before a Singapore commercial court tomorrow demanding compensation for the environmental pollution caused by the Express Pearl ship which caught fire while while within Sri Lankan waters.

The Singapore flagged X-Press Pearl, which caught fire and began sinking off Sri Lanka’s western coast on May 20, 2021 was the worst maritime disaster to have struck the country. It has had a significant impact on Sri Lanka’s sensitive coastal environment, local communities and the economy and killed a large number of marine life.

The Attorney General's Department is scheduled to file a case before the Singapore Commercial Court on Monday against the ownets of the ship demanding compensation for the environmental pollution that occurred after the ship had sunk.

Might cause creditor to stall and to collect the compo money Sunday, 23 April 2023 05:13 PM

Creditors are watching at all income the country/government gets. Especially windfall gains like by way of the compensation. If there seems good prospect for getting billions the creditors will most likely want to stall and not take any haircut. The court case might seem like ability to get billions, but maybe creditor will then refuse to take haircut and in the end we are losing twice what we get from the compo.

I think that is the right decision. If we filed it in SL there is no way of enforcing it.

Why do Baratha thennakoon, Sepal Amarasinghe, and Tharidu Uduwaragedara not speak, and do not do a program on Xpress Pearl ship fire? The country is to lose billions of money due to corrupt, lethargic politicians and officers in a few days' time. I wonder if these YouTubers are silent because they got hefty amounts from the Ship Company or Insurance company

This will go nowhere and there will be no scrutiny. After a few months the government will blame the Singaporean authorities and the Ranil rajapaksa criminal syndicate including deal dasa will celebrate their windfall of $250 million.
