Some 57 individuals, including student Buddhist monks (48) of the Buddhist and Pali University and nine Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) convener Wasantha Mudalige, were arrested for breaking into the Education Ministry premises this evening, police said.

They said nine IUSF students including the convener were arrested.

The protesters had entered the ministry and locked the officers and staff as hostages for three hours as the protesters placed a demand to open the Buddhist and Pali University in Homagama.

It was reported that the student Buddhist monks and the IUSF members had surrounded the office of the Education Minister in the department. The staff and officers of the ministry said that the students were blocking the doors and did not let anyone go out.

The protesers demanded to open the Buddhist and Pali Universities as soon as possible.

On Wednesday (22) the police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the angry protesters during a protest march organized by the Inter-University Buddhist Federation of the Homagama Buddhist and Pali University at Pitipana Junction in Homagama. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Just cancel this mudalige's studentship! It is not his rights to study(or drag the study period for years) paid for by ordinary citizens tax money! Anyway the investment on his free education is of no use for the country- either he will seek asylum, keep getting paid for disrupting the country. He will never get a private sector job nor will he be an effective public service officer (other than organising strikes). Rather spend the money spent on his university education to feed strays on the road!

Well said. This why free education should be withdrawn and be given only to the deserving. If a student does not complete his studies in 4 years it should be withdrawn. We cannot be taxed to pay for the education of these rowdies.

The studentship should be taken off of Mudalige, eating up the tax payers money, does not study, just a trouble maker.
