47 persons arrested while trying to migrate illegally to Australia

Forty-seven me and women suspected to be on an illegal migration attempt to Australia via sea have been arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy during a search operation in the seas off Negombo, in the western coast yesterday.

The Navy said during the search operation conducted in seas off Negombo, SLNS Nandimithra intercepted a suspicious local multiday fishing trawler carrying a group of illegal migrants attempting to reach Australia. 

Among the apprehended, 34 were males including five who were involved in this racket, six females and seven children. 

The suspects were residents of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Wennappuwa, Nattandiya, Chilaw and Batticaloa, from one to 50 years of age, were handed over to the Colombo Harbour Police for onward legal proceedings.
