Some thirty three beggars have been arrested in the Colombo city for begging in public today. These persons were arrested in an operation carried out by the police in Maligawatte, Keselwatte and Slave Island last night.

The 7 female beggars and 26 male beggars are to be produced before the Fort Majistrate today.

They beg because they have no alternative. If begging is prohibited then the Govt should provide them with living/food benefits like a dole to those beggars. It's travesty of justice at the highest level for those innocent people. Who gave the order to arrest them?
