247 km of roads, 40 bridges damaged: President calls for rapid repairs



Colombo, Dec. 4 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed authorities to give urgent priority to repairing damaged road infrastructure to restore normalcy and ensure uninterrupted transport services in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

The President issued these instructions during a meeting held this afternoon (04) at the Presidential Secretariat with officials from the Ministry of Transport & Highways and the Ministry of Finance.

The discussion focused on the widespread damage caused to highways and bridges by landslides, flooding and rising water levels, as well as the funding and timelines required for restoration work.

Officials reported that around 247 km of A- and B-grade roads have been damaged across the country, while 40 bridges have been destroyed. They also noted that 175 of the 256 affected road sections have now been reopened to traffic.

President Dissanayake emphasized the need to expedite repairs to critical transport routes to facilitate emergency operations and help communities resume daily activities.
