10,077 train services cancelled, 120,993 scheduled in 2022

The publication of the 2022 annual Auditor General's report reveals that out of a total of 120,993 scheduled train services for the year, 10,077 train services were cancelled in 2022.

The train operations began according to a schedule in 1865.

According to the report, train commuters lodged complaints about trains not adhering to the schedule in 2022.

In response, 32,844 train services ran punctually, constituting 72% of the planned train services for the year.

Despite accounting for 6% of total passenger transportation and 6.5% of goods transportation in Sri Lanka, the train service struggled to augment its contribution.

Furthermore, the railway network, which initially covered 1,521 kilometres in 1934, has contracted by 56 kilometres to 1,465 kilometres in 2021, even with the addition of a new 32-kilometre section up to Beliatta.
