Parliament to be dissolved soon

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to dissolve Parliament shortly and call for a General Election, Minister Maithripala Sirisena said. The term of the current Parliament ends in April this year. The government also said that it will begin preparing for the polls.

A group of four independent U.N. rights investigators have, in a report, noted that Sri Lanka was among dozens of countries where people were detained at secret locations and grilled to gather information. The report is to be discussed in March.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed relief that the presidential elections concluded relatively free of violence and he reiterated his call to the country’s political parties to abide by the official results and to pursue any concerns peacefully.

Asian election monitors are calling for a voter registration audit if claims by local elections monitors of fraud in the counting of votes and disfranchisement of voters are true. They say this would prove if the voter list is clean or dirty.
