Akashvani News - A historic cultural milestone was achieved in Colombo today as more than 5,000 Bharatanatyam dancers performed together, clinching the Guinness World Record for the largest Bharatanatyam dance lesson. The event, organised by Sangamam Global Academy, India and Samgamizh Liya, Sri Lanka, was held at Galle Face Green in Colombo and brought together thousands of dancers from Sri Lanka, India and several other countries, in a celebration of the Indian classical dance and cultural heritage.
The event aimed to showcase the timeless tradition of Bharatanatyam while fostering cultural ties across borders. Participants, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, performed synchronized movements under the guidance of guru as part of the official record attempt. The Guinness World Records adjudication process was completed following the performance, after which the world record citation was formally presented.
Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, received the Guinness World Records certificate on behalf of the performers and organizers. Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Jha congratulated the dancers and organizers for achieving the global recognition and highlighted the role of culture in strengthening people-to-people connections between India and Sri Lanka.
The event was attended by Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, and Deputy Ministers Sundarlingam Pradeep, and Mahinda Jayasinghe as it drew a large audience and featured a festive atmosphere celebrating the shared cultural traditions of the region.The achievement marks a significant moment for the Bharatanatyam community and underscores the enduring popularity of one of India’s oldest and most revered classical dance forms.
