The body of a passenger who died on board SriLankan Airlines flight No. UL 605 from Melbourne on Saturday night was handed over to the Katunayake police.

The Airport Duty Officer said the deceased Ratnalingam Ramalingam (75) was a resident of Jaffna. The passenger had taken ill and died a little while after the flight took off from Melbourne airport. However, the crew had decided to proceed to Katunayake without returning to Melbourne.

The body was referred to the Negombo Hospital for postmortem examinations. (T.K.G. Kapila)

It's a cursed airline. Keep traveling

    Ram Sunday, 28 May 2023 02:53 PM

If the passenger collapsed/died little after the take off UL was obliged to return to Melbourne or Adelaide which ever Airport was closer without taking a decision to save money for the Carrier and fly to the destination. Flying with a dead body would have inconvenienced the other passengers in the seats nearby where the deceased occupied.

Maybe plaster Jerom had something to do with it.

    Raj Sunday, 28 May 2023 03:56 PM

When a judicial inquiry is held to determine how this passenger died, a doctor would be called upon to give the answer and the coroner would accept the opinion of the doctor as the cause of the death. The truth is the doctor would not know the north from the south as to the real cause of the death. “Doctors Have No Science To Understand How The Human Body Works And Why It Suddenly Stops”. Yet we put these doctors in charge of human health.

Sri Lankan Airlines should have returned to Melbourne and saved his life. Any Airline does this. Why was CSR not discharged in this case

Irresponsible Airline. Police must investigate why Cabin Crew and Pilot did not return to closest Airport and get immediate medical attention. I will never fly Sri Lankan again. I think Sea Travel will be a safer option

Firstly- deepest condolences to the bereaved family. @Ram- don’t take everything in negativity. Staff would have followed due procedures. When it is confirmed no pulse or any other signs of life, after attempts to revive- next step is to inform destination authorities and continue. If they turned around- would you pay for repatriation?

It is a tragedy and my deepest condolences to the bereaved family. If it was soon after takeoff, the airline should have returned to Melbourne or the nearest airport.

Hope, a side effect of the CORONA Vaccine.

Re Sunil: He took ill and died suddenly mid flight. Turning back wouldn't have made any difference.

    Mahila Tuesday, 30 May 2023 06:12 AM

Soon after 'Take-Off' - not midflight!!?? Save all the USD?? Never new income because people AVOID!?

    Mahila Monday, 29 May 2023 01:53 AM

very Good REASON IS AVOID, BANKRUPT AIRLINE and FIND "SAFETY FIRST AIRLINE", ensue this CRAP!

    Sivalingam Monday, 29 May 2023 02:34 AM

    Worst airline ever.

    Kasun Monday, 29 May 2023 06:09 AM

Mentally sick ill headed people like Raj are always in the mood of criticising doctors all the time even when the matter is never applicable to doctors...we are living with such jealous, stupid people

    DW Monday, 29 May 2023 07:46 AM

Any airline would've returned to the nearest airport. Absolutely shocking!!! If it returned to an Australian airport, an Australian medical officer would investigate as to what caused the death and Sri Lankan officials would be powerless to interfere and try to influence the outcome. Now that the body would be examined in Sri Lanka, they can do what ever they want. They could even say that he was dead even before he came to the Melbourne airport.

    Terrence K Monday, 29 May 2023 08:48 AM

No one can avoid the haunted plane but the only solution is for weak HEARTS to take some sleeping pills and intone "Bon Voyage Terra Firma"

Know your facts Monday, 29 May 2023 10:36 AM

If the flight returned for a dead man the airline will loose passengers who are on transit will loose..dead mans family will have to sell his jaffna property to afford a funeral in Australia or retrieve the body...great service done to the family by Sri Lankan

    Sam Monday, 29 May 2023 02:13 PM

Please give respect to the crew, ulike the people in managenet of Sri Lankan Air Lines. Before we comment we must know the Operating Proceedures. There is no requirment for any airline to land at the nearest airport if the passenger had expired onboard. The crew and any other passenger who is suitably qualifed would have tried to review the person and not succeeded. So before bagging the carrier and the staff onboard get the facts correctly. May the deseased rest in peace.

    Vernon Monday, 29 May 2023 02:26 PM

Why are some people commenting the flight should have returned? If the person is Sri Lankan, and if confirmed dead, the best thing is to come to SL. Best for all passengers including transit passengers, best for relatives of deceased, best for airline etc.

    Rohini Monday, 29 May 2023 07:30 PM

@ Kasun, I am a female undergraduate in Australia , can you exactly pinpoint where what Raj has commented is false. I don’t know who this Raj is but the whole world has started to question the scientific capabilities of doctors specially after seeing millions of people dying in hospitals with doctors clueless during COVID. But what you want to see is “the humanity keep suffering from medical problems and infections” while the doctors are allowed to continue as medical leaders, preventing the real experts the scientists come and take charge of medicine and find CURES.

Niranjala Thayanantha Sunday, 18 June 2023 06:25 AM

The passenger had the meal and gone to sleep and causing no concern to his relatives in the flight. The wife attempted to wake him up failed and that’s when the crew was alerted to see he was dead .
