Amidst the upcoming election uproar candidates who faced nomination committees of their respective parties grabbed attention during the past few weeks. Among the many candidates belonging to various professions three candidates who faced Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) nomination committee, Ruwanthi Mangala, Judith White (Ginger) and Gayesha Perera grabbed the most attention.
Ruwanthi Mangala and Judith White expressed their views as to why they did not receive the opportunity to contest, but despite the several attempts made by the Daily Mirror to contact Gayesha Perera, she was not available to comment.

Popular songstress Judith White alias Ginger grabbed media attention when she faced the SLFP nomination committee a few weeks back. However she was denied nomination. In a discussion with the Daily Mirror she said that she did not get the opportunity to contest due to the “black spots” others had.

Q. Although a lot of your supporters had expected that you would get the ticket to contest you did not get it. What do you have to say about it?

I am not a loser. I will give my assistance to the party until the elections. I am gladly helping the party. What I have to say is that it is the people who lost the chance to vote for me. I lost the opportunity to serve them more than that it is a loss for them. Certain ministers who did not like to see me coming took steps to prevent me getting the candidacy.

As you know, failures are beginning of success and this is just the start. I gained more and more publicity.

Q. If you were given an opportunity to contest at another election, would you consider contesting?
If I am given another opportunity definitely I would contest. As far as I am concerned I am with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his development projects. Even he knows me who I am. I am still among the people. Unlike actresses who would come on screen on and off I have never forgotten. And yes I am a galloping horse and I will continue with what I have been doing.

Q. Do you have plans to join another party in the future?
No, I would not contest from another party. People got to know me as a representative of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Definitely I am going to stick with the party. I will do everything I can do for President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s victory.

Q. Why do you think you lost the opportunity? Is it because fellow actresses who were in the fray?
To some extent, yes. Whatever black spots they had affected me indubitably. It is natural for people to look at me along with the image they have.

Q. What do you have to tell your fans or the people who wanted you to contest?
‘Ginger’ is someone people made. I am happy to be in the entertaining business. If I came this far, well this is just the beginning. After this whole affair the number of people around me multiplied. There were many reports published saying that I am not even qualified to sing. What do they know about me? But all these strengthened me more.

There is always a next chance and I will be working for that.

I paid the price for others’ foolishness

Popular actress Ruwanthi Mangala got the spotlight a few weeks back when she faced the SLFP nomination committee. Although there seem to be fair chance for her to get the candidacy she did not receive it.

Q. What are you hoping to do now that you didn’t get the nominations?

Although I did not get the opportunity to contest I will continue to help the party.

Q. Would you consider joining another party?
No I have principles. I would not join another party. I have been with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) throughout and will not be joining another party at any cost.

Q. Why do you think you did not get the opportunity? Was there any interference from seniors of the party?
From what I got to know there was no interference of any sort from the seniors of the party. But as I think it is the other actresses who faced the nomination committee. Their behaviour and the responses given must have made the nomination committee not to give nomination to anyone. They have answered the questions asked in a very foolish manner. To the media also they have given utterly unwise statements. This clearly affected my image. There are no other reasons but the others who came forward.

Q. Would you consider contesting a parliamentary election?
If given opportunity I will. Many people rallied around me and many people wanted me to contest the upcoming provincial elections. They were saddened when I did not receive nomination. I have to do something for the people who are with me. Hence if I get opportunity I will definitely contest. Now itself I have received invitations from many to contest at a parliamentary election.

Q. you were invited to politics by Parliamentarian Duminda Silva. So you would continue to be associated with him and his projects?
Yes, I was introduced to politics by MP Duminda Silva. But prior to facing the nomination committee I requested him to give me an opportunity to contest from the Kolonnawa area as I live there. And upon my request he invited me to contest this time. Yes, since I represent the area I would continue to do service to people in the area.

Q. What is your next step?
As I said I am planning to contest an election whenever there is an opportunity. I will be commencing campaigns from now on. I have been engaged in social service throughout but unfortunately like some others I never took photographs and published them. I did not come here out of the blues. But from now on I will do my campaign and people will see what exactly I have been doing and what I am going to do.
