Editorial - Why don't they set up Eelam in Tamil Nadu?

The antics of Tamil Diaspora including its latest trump card, the controversial British TV Channel 4 seem to have succeeded in precipitating a chain reaction in fostering hatred in Tamil Nadu against Sri Lanka, shortly after the photographs of alleged killing of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s son were telecast on a TV programme a few weeks ago.

The Tamil cause was taken up by students in Tamil Nadu who first started actively protesting in rallies which their police tried to settle amicably, but when some students were locked up and assaulted, the situation escalated and has resulted in the locking out of some of our cricketers from 10 IPL matches to be played in Chennai.

This is indeed an unprecedented move in the history of cricket between our two countries, where Premier League matches which have an international audience numbering many millions throughout the world have been cancelled in one state in India. As is usual the best players are drawn from our own teams and from the teams of other countries. What is more is the fact that they were selected through the usual auctioning process where considerable payments sometimes amounting to more than a million dollars were paid to the cricketers individually by the owners of the teams.

These students in Tamil Nadu have discovered that their joint voice has been favourably reflected in the media. These misguided youths are blissfully unaware that it was this same Eelam lobby that was responsible for the assassination of their former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991. This demand is the subject of a YouTube video which is currently attracting thousands of hits on a daily basis.

The students’ joint protests throughout Tamil Nadu have found favour with their Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram. She has also spoken about reports of the travails of fishermen from Tamil Nadu who flagrantly violate our territorial waters on a nightly basis. It is reported that Jayalalithaa Jayaram has also threatened to unilaterally take over Kachativu, which India reluctantly ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974 when it was proved that we had sovereignty over this island.

Ms. Jayalalithaa has also pushed through a resolution in the State Assembly requesting the Indian government to stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly country. This resolution also demands that India moves a UN resolution seeking a referendum for a separate state of Eelam in Sri Lanka. If she is so adamant on a separate state of Eelam for the Tamils, one wonders why she does not carve out this Eelam in her own territory of Tamil Nadu also to enable all the Tamils who are dissatisfied with conditions in Sri Lanka and abroad, to migrate to this blissful state of Tamil Eelam.

It seems that our Government is not sufficiently aware of the seriousness of the current situation as it is not defusing this crisis by actively taking steps to work out a political solution.

Quite right - if Tamils wish for a separate state. it has to be in no other place than their place of Dravidian racial origin, Tamil Nadu and nowhere else on this Earth
