The Government today decided to increase the number of national schools in all Divisional Secretariats to one thousand.
The decision was announced during the weekly cabinet briefing at the Information Department today.

He said plans are being drawn to implement this programme in three phases.
Accordingly, the Education Minister presented a proposal to develop and elevate one selected Provincial Council school as a National School in each of the 123 Divisional Secretariat Divisions as the first phase, in which there are no National Schools.
Also proposed to upgrade 673 schools, which will be based on identified criteria as national schools under the second phase, he said.
Also the existing 373 national schools will also be developed under the third phase, he added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
